ABOUT US

Nestled just a mile from Lake Hartwell, Downtown Hartwell is a hidden gem in Northeast Georgia where history, nature, and community meet, offering a charming small-town experience filled with local art, unique shops, inviting restaurants, and unforgettable events.

Historic Downtown Hartwell, founded in 1854 as the seat of Hart County, was incorporated as a town in 1856 and later as a city in 1904. Just one mile from the beautiful Lake Hartwell—the third-largest lake managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers—our town offers access to over 960 miles of shoreline, perfect for boating, fishing, camping, and lakeside dining.

Conveniently located between Atlanta and Charlotte in scenic Northeast Georgia, Hartwell is easily reached via I-85 at exit 177. Our charming downtown features a vibrant mix of specialty shops, local art and craft boutiques, home décor and design stores, and a variety of delicious restaurants.

Rooted in history and rich in culture, Hartwell is known to the Cherokee Nation as Ah-Yeh-Li A-Lo-Hee, or “Center of the World.” It’s also home to notable landmarks like early textile mills, a historic Coca-Cola bottling plant, and the legacy of Revolutionary War heroine Nancy Hart.

We invite you to explore Downtown Hartwell and experience all that makes our community special!
